Car diagnostics in Kamloops

What happens during a diagnostic check?
A diagnostic check finds out why a warning light is on or why your car isn't running right. At LSG Auto Nation in Kamloops, we scan the vehicle's computers for fault codes, test the system the codes point to, and explain what we found and what it will take to fix before any repair work begins.
How we can help
Check-engine light diagnosis
A steady check-engine light means the engine computer has stored a fault. A flashing light usually signals a misfire that can damage the catalytic converter, so stop driving as soon as it's safe to do so. We read the codes, then test the part or circuit they point to, so you pay to fix the actual cause rather than a guess based on a code.
Engine misfires
A misfire feels like a shake, stumble or loss of power, often with a flashing check-engine light. It can come from a worn spark plug, a failing ignition coil, a clogged fuel injector or a vacuum leak. We find which cylinder is misfiring and why, then fix the cause. If the light is flashing, drive gently and get it checked soon, because a misfire can damage the catalytic converter.
Overheating
If the temperature gauge climbs or you see steam, pull over and turn the engine off, because driving an overheating engine can cause serious damage. Common causes are a coolant leak, a stuck thermostat, a failing water pump, a radiator fan that isn't working or a blocked radiator. We pressure-test the cooling system to find the cause and explain the fix.
Dashboard warning lights and fault codes
Modern cars store fault codes in several computers, not just the engine. We scan the engine, transmission and body control modules, review stored and pending codes alongside live data, and tell you which warnings affect safety and which can wait.
Rough idle, stalling and hesitation
Drivability problems often come and go, which makes them hard to pin down. Tell us when it happens, such as on cold starts, at highway speed or under load. We check live sensor data and test the fuel, ignition and air intake systems until we find the fault.
Hard starting and poor fuel economy
A car that cranks for a long time before starting, or suddenly uses more fuel, usually has a fault the computer can help locate, such as a failing sensor, a misfire or a fuel delivery problem. We test the likely causes and explain the fix before any repair.
Noises
Squeals, grinding, clunks, rattles and hums each point to a different part of the car. We find out when the noise happens, take the car for a drive and inspect the likely parts, so we fix the cause instead of guessing. A short phone video of the sound helps.
Leaks
The colour of a leak tells you a lot. Dark brown or black is usually engine oil, red can be transmission or power steering fluid, green, orange or pink is coolant, and clear and slippery can be brake fluid. We find where it comes from and tell you how urgent it is.
What's included
- A scan of the engine, transmission and body control modules for stored and pending fault codes
- A live check of sensor data while the engine runs
- Hands-on testing of the component or circuit the codes point to
- A plain-language explanation of the problem and your repair options
- Tracking down misfires, overheating, noises and leaks
Warning signs to watch for
- The check-engine light or another warning light is on or flashing
- Rough idle, stalling or hesitation when you accelerate
- The engine shakes or stumbles, a sign of a misfire
- The temperature gauge runs high, or you see steam from under the hood
- A sudden drop in fuel economy
- The car is hard to start or cranks for a long time
- New noises, smells or vibrations you can't explain
What to expect
- 1When you book, tell us the symptoms and when they happen.
- 2We connect a scan tool and read the fault codes.
- 3We test the likely causes, so we're not just guessing from a code.
- 4We walk you through what we found and give you a quote before any repair.
How much will it cost?
The cost depends on your vehicle and what it needs. Book online with your year, make and model, and we'll confirm your quote before any work begins.

Diagnostics FAQ
Is it safe to drive with the check-engine light on?
If the light is steady and the car drives normally, it's usually safe to drive it to the shop soon. If the light is flashing, the engine may be misfiring, which can damage the catalytic converter, so slow down and have it checked as soon as possible.
Does a fault code tell you exactly what's wrong?
No. A code tells us which system reported a problem, not which part failed. We test the circuit and components before recommending a repair, so you don't pay for parts you didn't need.
Will the light go off after the repair?
Once the fault is fixed, we clear the codes. Some lights stay off straight away; others need a short drive for the car's computer to re-run its self-tests.
Can you diagnose electrical problems too?
Yes. Our diagnostics cover electrical faults such as batteries that keep dying, flickering lights and accessories that stop working. See our electrical service page for more.
How do I book a diagnostic check?
Book online or call the shop. Tell us which warning lights you see and when the problem happens, so we can plan the right tests.
