Cooling system and heater repair in Kamloops

Updated

Why is my engine overheating?

Most overheating comes from low coolant, usually because of a leak, or from a part that has stopped working: the thermostat, the water pump, the radiator or a cooling fan. LSG Auto Nation in Kamloops finds the cause and fixes it. If your temperature gauge climbs into the red, pull over and turn off the engine, because driving on can cause serious engine damage.

How we can help

  • Engine overheating

If your temperature gauge climbs or a warning light comes on, the engine is running too hot. We check the coolant level, look for leaks, test the thermostat, the water pump and the cooling fans, and pressure-test the system, so we fix the cause instead of just adding coolant.

  • Coolant leaks

Coolant is usually green, orange or pink, and it often smells sweet. A puddle under the front of your car, or a coolant level that keeps dropping, means there is a leak. Common sources are hoses, the radiator, the water pump and the heater core.

  • Radiators and hoses

The radiator gets rid of the heat your engine makes, and rubber hoses carry coolant to and from it. Hoses get hard and crack with age, and radiators can leak or clog. We replace worn hoses and leaking radiators, then refill and bleed the system.

  • Thermostat and water pump

The thermostat controls how hot the engine runs, and the water pump moves coolant around it. A stuck thermostat can cause overheating, or an engine that never warms up and a heater that blows cold. A failing water pump often leaks or makes a whining noise.

  • Heater not blowing hot

Your car's heater uses hot coolant from the engine to warm the cabin. If it blows cold, the cause is often low coolant, a thermostat stuck open, a blocked heater core or a faulty blend door, the flap that mixes hot and cold air. In a BC winter, it's worth fixing quickly.

Cooling System FAQ

Can I keep driving if my car is overheating?

No. Pull over when it's safe and turn off the engine. Driving an overheating engine can warp or crack expensive parts. Don't open the radiator cap while it's hot, because the coolant is under pressure.

Can I just add water?

In an emergency, water can get you to a shop, but it doesn't protect against freezing or rust. Have the leak found and the system refilled with the right coolant as soon as you can.

Why does my heater blow cold air?

The most common causes are low coolant, a thermostat stuck open, a blocked heater core or a faulty blend door. We test each one, so you only pay for the part that has actually failed.

How often should coolant be changed?

Follow your owner's manual. Many newer vehicles use long-life coolant that lasts several years, but it still wears out. See our fluid services for a coolant flush.

Can my cooling system repair be done the same day?

Many cooling system repairs can be finished the same day, depending on parts. We'll tell you how long it will take before we start.
