Common car parts, explained
By LSG Auto Nation ·

Short answer
Brake pads squeeze the rotors to stop the car. The battery starts the engine, and the alternator recharges it while you drive. Spark plugs light the fuel, shocks and struts keep the tires on the road, and the radiator keeps the engine cool. Each one gives a warning sign before it fails.
| Part | What it does | Sign it needs attention |
|---|---|---|
| Brake pads and rotors | The pads squeeze the rotors to slow the car | Squealing or grinding when you brake |
| Battery | Starts the engine and powers the electronics | Slow starts on cold mornings |
| Alternator | Recharges the battery while you drive | Battery light on, or dim lights |
| Spark plugs | Light the fuel inside the engine | Rough idling or worse fuel economy |
| Timing belt | Keeps the engine’s parts in step | Usually none, so replace it on schedule |
| Shocks and struts | Stop bouncing and keep the tires on the road | A bouncy ride, or a nose dive when braking |
| Radiator and thermostat | Keep the engine at the right temperature | The temperature gauge climbing |
| Catalytic converter | Cleans harmful gases from the exhaust | A rotten-egg smell or a flashing engine light |
